Time of the owls
The nights have been drawing in to such an extent that I find myself getting caught out and shutting the chickens up late, when the night is set. After a spell of clement weather, I found I had dodges a shower last night. The owls on the far woodland had struck up their night song. Their shrieks and soft hoots are a familiar sound and one which I find comforting.
Previous nights have seen me gasping at the stars but last night was cloud and I was woken a few times with high winds buffeting the house. Today storms have hit England, sending the woodland leaves scurrying up our window panes and rattling the bare tree tops against the slate-skies.
This is the scene as I type sat at the kitchen table. The north field is grey and the sky is touching ground; softening the horizon.
I am off to Bath tomorrow as a guest speaker; delivering to some Bath Spa University students. I was planning on looking professional and tidy by wearing a new dress. Bath can channel wind along it's main street and has been known to blow light skirts and dresses skyward. Let's hope things have calmed down a bit by then!
